April is National Occupational Therapy Month and at Therapia, we are celebrating all of our inspiring School-based Occupational Therapists! School Occupational Therapy is a vital profession that makes an impactful difference in the lives of many students. We know that it is the passion of our OTs in this profession that puts the students and their needs first.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapists work with injured, ill, or disabled people to promote physical and mental wellbeing through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. They help students develop, recover, and improve as well as maintain the skills needed for daily living and working.

School OTs spend their time in the classroom with their students to address the physical, cognitive, psychological, and sensory components of their performance. They do focus on advancing the students’ academic performance, but they also dedicate time to help increase participation in play and leisure activities, self-care, and social settings.

In this profession, an OT spends time analyzing a student’s activity and environmental behavior to provide the best modifications to help reduce a student’s barriers to participating in activities. They often sit alongside a student in the classroom while working through handwriting, coloring, and other fine motor skills.

How can you celebrate?

If you are an occupational therapist, this is the time to shine and wear your title with pride. Share your passion or the story of how you became an OT with co-workers, friends, and on your social channels. You might inspire someone you know in ways you didn’t expect.

If you aren’t an OT, take the time this month to honor a loved one in your life that is. Tell them how proud you are of the work they do and ask them to share more of their passion with you. It is their stories that will continue to inspire and give hope to students and families all around.

For teachers and families that work with an occupational therapist, this month is the chance to send them something special. Maybe a card or a little token to say thank you for their hard work, dedication, and care. The smallest of gestures are often the big reminders in a field driven by passion.

Become an Occupational Therapist with Therapia

A Therapia OT recently said, “Being an occupational therapist is incredibly rewarding. Often you get to work with students from a young age all the way through high school. The most rewarding part is seeing a student graduate and begin working. These students take such pride in their work and it is inspiring.”

We strive to empower others to foster independence at Therapia. Connect with us to learn more about where your OT career could take you!
